hot tub being moved on a dolly

Owning a hot tub is a wonderful way to add some relaxing entertainment to your property. However, the thought of having to lift and transport a hot tub to a new location may feel like a difficult task- especially because it’s a large investment that is worth maintaining and preserving.

Whether it’s because you’ve purchased a new home or the current location of your hot tub no longer works out best, taking the time to plan and prepare for a smooth move of your hot tub is worth the work.

You may be wondering things such as:

• What exactly the best way to lift a hot tub?

• Can you transport a hot tub on its side?

Well, the large size and heavy weight of the object may have you questioning what exactly will be the best way to transport the home space from spot A to spot B. Master Spa Parts ensures you, with the right planning, preparation and enough hands to do the job, and you will be able to safely move your hot tub.

The first step in this project would be to sit down and plan out the steps you’ll need to do and details on the project itself. Some of those details would include just how far the distance of the move will be or if there be any obstacles or hazards, such as a flight of stairs you may have to maneuver around. We recommend either:

• Having at least three sets of hands to do the job of picking up and moving the hot tub.

• If you have the budget to higher professional movers, that is an option to consider as well.

If you’d prefer to transport a hot tub yourself, then we recommend:

1. Sitting down to plan out what will need to happen in order to get the job done is the first step.

2. Gather the supplies that will be needed to lift and transport a hot tub. We recommend gathering several items, as well as any others you may want to include.

• The first would be a dolly. A dolly designed to move furniture is best for working with flat surfaces, while a dolly that’s made for moving large appliances is better equipped for handling a hot tub up or down a flight of stairs.

• Some straps to secure the hot tub with.

• Moving blankets for sliding if needed or to protect the hot tub from being scratched during transport and a moving vehicle.

• Furniture sliders or a few 4x4 plywood boards, will also come in handy.

• A pickup truck that can handle the load in the back or a moving truck, depending on what you prefer or have access to, should get the job done.

Get Up, Get Out and Get Back to Relaxing

Okay, the plans have been made, materials gathered and the big moving day is coming up quick.

About 48-24 hours before the transportation of your hot tub…

  1. Disconnect the power
  2. Drain the water from your home spa
  3. Dry the tub and it’s tubes (similar to some of the steps you may do to winterize your hot tub)
  4. Remove the cover from the home spa.

A good practice would be to transport the hot tub cover separately as to risk damaging it in the move.

On moving day:

• Using two people – one on each side of the spa – lift it off the ground while a third person slides the furniture sliders or plywood underneath.

• Place a dolly in the gap and load the hot tub onto the dolly.

• Use the straps to secure the hot tub to the dolly so that it does not move as you transport it. You may need to transport a hot tub on its side, this is best practice for getting it through a flight of stairs. When doing this, be sure that the person holding the dolly heads downstairs first.

• Slowly, take each step one-by-one and navigate the tub. Use your boards or moving blankets to load the hot tub into the moving vehicle.

Once you arrive at the new location…

• It would be good if the moving team scoped out the route that will be taken before unloading the home spa.

• If there are any doors along the route that need to be removed, take them off the hinges and temporally place them to the side.

• Once the route is prepare, carefully unload your hot tub and navigate your way to the new location, being sure to avoid obstacles along the way.

• Once it is safely set in the new location, you can then restore its power supply and begin to refill the hot tub with water.

• Be sure to sanitize it with the proper cleaners

That first soak post-move will feel extra relaxing and super satisfying knowing you have done a job well done to transport a hot tub!
