How to Clean Your Hot Tub & Hot Tub Cover

cleaning of a hot tub and hot tub cover

Maintenance of your spa is so important! So it’s our job to help you know when and how to maintain your tub. Below, you will see how to clean your hot tub and hot tub cover easily and properly. This will keep your hot tub operating for years to come.

When To Clean Your Hot Tub

Knowing when to clean your hot tub is just as important as knowing how to clean your hot tub. Every time we use the hot tub, impurities from our bodies, regardless of how clean we are, become part of the water in the hot tub. Things like dyes, perfumes, soaps, and deodorants are added to the hot tub and, over time, could cloud the water. Depending on how often you use it or how many people use it, you could find yourself cleaning the water or changing it altogether. Check out our water filtration systems and cleaning products to help keep your hot tub fresh and clean! If the water smells, change it! If you see that a de-foamer isn’t cleaning it up - change it! If it’s being used every day, change it every 30 days or so!

Hot Tub Cleaning Procedure

  1. Take the cover off of your hot tub and put it against a wall. Then, rinse it off with water (before you start cleaning it!)
  2. After pre-rinsing, spray SpaBoss Restore on the cover and wipe down with a cloth rag.
  3. While wiping, go across the top of the cover and make your way down. Be sure to rub gently during the process, but with a harder motion to get off the harder to remove dirt.
  4. For the underside of your cover use an equal parts vinegar and water solution to clean lightly scrubbing if necessary; then thoroughly rinse.

Change the Hot Tub Water

As mentioned above, keeping your water filter fresh and clean will help reduce the amount of times you will need to change the water. Changing your water out can be costly and time consuming. Staying on top of the basic daily maintenance is the best way to keep your hot tub clean. Having said that, you have to change your water eventually. Once you do have an empty hot tub, you can use cleaning products from Master Spa to gently wipe down seats and debris from the surrounding area. Follow instructions on the packaging, you can ensure that all surface areas are clean before you refill the hot tub. A helpful tip is to flush water through the hot tub a second time before you refill completely. This way, any cleaning products will be flushed through the piping system and not stuck, risking any damage to pipes.

Cleaning Your Hot Tub Cover

Typically hot tub covers are made of vinyl, so they handle moisture better. There are vinyl cleaners that can clean your cover, but scrubbing it as we decribe in the procedure below typically gets it cleaner. Additionally, be sure to periodically check the vapor barrier that most covers have (if yours has it inside the zipper), to make sure it’s not ripped and still functioning. Clean this at least three times a season, and check the barrier twice in that time period.
